The High Line
Once an abandoned, elevated freight train track, the High Line is now one of Manhattan’s most beloved parks. This skinny green space winds through Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, giving you unique aerial views of the city. It’s filled with beautiful gardens, cool public art installations, and plenty of benches where you can people watch or peek through the tall grasses at traffic down below. The High Line is especially peaceful early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Stroll from end to end, grab lunch at one of the eateries in the converted rail cars, and don’t forget your camera!

Roosevelt Island
Just a quick tram ride from Manhattan, Roosevelt Island feels like it’s a world away. Cross over on the iconic red cable car and explore the quiet parklands, gorgeous river views, and small-town vibes of this car-free island. Top spots include the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, a memorial to the 32nd president. There’s also a creepy but cool abandoned smallpox hospital and ruins to explore. Or just find a picnic table along the river and take in views of the Manhattan skyline you won’t find anywhere else in the city.

City Hall Station
Deep underground, the original 1904 City Hall subway station has been closed for decades. But it’s possible to tour this beautifully preserved relic of old New York. Admire the skylights, brass chandeliers, and Guastavino tile arches on a super exclusive tour. Only 160 lucky people are allowed access each year, so reservations fill up fast. Adding to the mystery, the 6 train still passes through the station’s loop track even though it doesn’t stop. So if you manage to get a tour, listen for the whoosh of the trains!
